"Comparative Analysis on Individual Choice Behaviour Models Focusing on Decision Making Rules and Latent Components" (Supervisor: Prof. Taka Morikawa) <Abstract> In order to promote car users' modal shift to transit by implementing effective transportation policies, accurate models on modal shift are required. However, traditional compensatory models, which assume additive utility functions using only objective factors as explanatory variables, haven't always and precisely described the intention of the modal change. In this research, we built some models considering 1) latent components of each individual using latent variables estimated by LISREL model, 2) non-compensatory functions based on semi-ordered lexicographic rule, and 3) RP/SP combined estimation method. Comparing with the traditional models, we found the usefulness of models, which use latent variables and non-compensatory rule. Full factorial or fractional factorial designs have been frequently used just in order to keep orthogonality and to avoid multi-colinearity between the attributes. However, these factorial designs have a lot of practical problems. Although many methods are introduced to solve some of these problems, there is no powerful way which solves all problems at once. Therefore, we need to combine some existing methods in the experiment design. So far, several textbooks about stated preference techniques have been published, but most of them just introduced some existing methods for experimental design and gave less guidance how to combine them. In this paper, we build a framework which brings an easier guideline to build SP design. In each step of the framework, we show a problem to be considered and methods to solve it. For each method, the advantage, disadvantage and the criteria are explained. Based on this framework, we believe even
the beginner can build a reasonable
design.

"A System to Build Countermeasures against the Traffic-related Air Pollution in the Developing Countries with the Internet Technology" (Supervisor: Prof. Yoshi Hayashi) <Abstract> In many metropolises of developing countries, traffic-related air pollution has become so serious, and building and implementing countermeasures such a problem is in emergency. But, it is rather difficult to treat such a problem systematically because several components interact each other complexly in reality. This study aims at grasping the processes of building countermeasures as an analogy to the medical health check for human being, and developing a support system with the knowledge-based database that involves several inspection manuals and existing countermeasure samples. This system adopts the internet technology to realize user-friendly GUI and also be useful to help the organizational agencies to build a database by themselves. Applying this system, the transport and environment experts in the developing countries with less experience could build countermeasures more easily. |
