Overcoming the Liability of Outsidership in Family Firm Internationalisation

Abstract

How do family values shape the way family firms expand across borders? Drawing on a longitudinal, single-case study of a second-generation, Netherlands-based family business, this study develops a process model of “values-based internationalisation.” It shows how explicit family values — trust, honesty, respect, and integrity — cultivate trust within international networks, helping the firm shift from outsidership to insidership and overcome the liability of outsidership in foreign markets.
